Except, of course, that they often did not survive. Anaphylaxis? Dead. Heart attack or stroke? Most likely dead or disabled. Mental illness (which, in Ye Olde Days, could include lots of things)β commitment to an asylum.
Oh Im aware I was more speaking in the overall sense. With the proportion of the population that would have unfortunately just been written off as lost cause its surprising the species as a whole made it to the modern era.
Books. The right book can make you laugh, make you cry, make you happy, make you angry, and make you forget real life all just by the author using the same 26 letters (in English of course) in different combinations.
Also, books let you listen to someone who has been dead for literally thousands of years. I still can get blown away when I read something that was written in ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece, or Rome.
SO. MANY. BOOKS. And written on subjects and in genres that are so wide ranging, itβs amazing.
That is always incredible.
Itβs so special. I really admire how much effort has put into restoring literature that otherwise would have been lost. Humans are amazing.
