100%, there is no way we are the only planet in a nearly infinite universe that managed to produce life.

For anyone that saw my previous comment, I was joking, but when I looked back at it I noticed that it might dissuade conversation on this topic.

Sorry about that, please share your views.

Does anyone talk about the Drake equation these days? The bottom line is that we are making better estimates of the number of habitable planets, but the value of L (how long technologically advanced species exist) is getting less certain.

I don’t think anyone can say that humans are unique throughout all of time and space; that seems absurd! The Drake equation is about the probability of humans actually contacting another intelligent species.

This SMBC cartoon seems pertinent.

I believe there’s life out there, there might be sapient technologically advanced life out there.

Do I believe they visit us? No. I think this is because my parents are Air Force, so I’m aware of how many sightings were actually experimental aircraft.

Same. Do they exist? Probably. Do they come here? No.

Sightings aside, the biggest evidence seems to be that ancient peoples did stuff. And it also seems to be focused on non-white people doing stuff, even though there’s similar stuff in Europe (e.g. the Pyramids of Güímar) that everyone attributes to superior engineering.

It also seems suspicious that aliens would show up, reveal themselves to a handful of people, and then just leave. If they have the tech to get here, they probably have the tech to get on our computers and get a ton of data that way, including a lot of information on the human body. They could also spread information that way, too. If they actually do need to get on the planet, we’d be seeing things that are way more widespread. Instead, it’s only a few people who often immediately begin making money off of their claims.

I’ll not spoil it but the novel, “The Three Body Problem” has a depressing answer to the question of why more advanced civilisations haven’t contacted us.

It’s very common for people to describe UFO’s as a “black triangle.”

These same people don’t seem to take into account the shape and color of a few of our established stealth aircraft.

The “impossible” movements are more than likely a trick of the eyes/optical illusion.

And there are enough legitimate natural causes for colorful skylights that we don’t need to jump to “aliens” when we see them.

That said, I’m 100% positive alien life exists. I’m not positive intelligent life exists elsewhere, because for all we know humanity is a fluke (we’re also astoundingly dumb for such a smart species). That said, at the very least microscopic life IS out there. And as you said, if technologically advanced species do exist, they aren’t the reason we have UFO sightings. (Among other things, the nearest star system would taken darn near 100 years to travel to/from at the speed of light.)

I would not at all be surprised to learn that there is alien life out there, even intelligent life. I would be immensely surprised to learn that any had made it to Earth.

Given the size of the universe, it does seem unlikely that there’s no other beings out there somewhere.

Either it was extremely stealthy or choose not to hang around.

The book’s been made into a tv series which I keep meaning to watch.

People always forget the “time” part of space and time. Even if you assume that a sentient alien species happened to develop on the closest habitable planet to us (which is incredibly unlikely). They are just as likely to have evolved, lived, died and turned to dust before our ancestors developed a backbone.

The odds are just so astoundingly low of any alien being even possible to interact with Humans. Its why so many sci fi novels have to write in some hand waving to get around the speed of light. Because there is a speed limit that so severly limits the amount of space that a human could ever interact with.

So yes there is probably some form of life somewhere in the universe. But when you factor in the percentage of planets that are habitable, the odds of the species being in a compatible level of civilization at the same time as us, the odds of the species being similar enough to us physically for us to even interact with, and that there small little bubble of accessible space happens to touch our little bubbly of accessible space its a question that is purely theoretical and always will be.

Its like in theory some billionare could decide to have a 500 pound statue of cockateal made out of solid gold, engrave a will saying “I leave all my money to whoever finds this” on its beak, take it up in their jet and throw it out the window, it could then land in my backyard just as I was taking the trash out. That would be life changing if it happened but its so ludicrously unlikely its not really worth devoting all that much time to planning for.

I expect other life to exist in the Universe, but I don’t believe flying saucers are real.

The universe is too large for other intelligent life to not exist. However, there are several reasons why we have not encountered aliens.

  1. We currently the only advanced species out there because the other civilizations got too big and collapsed on themselves.
1a) We are somewhere on the timeline of it but only one advanced civilization can exist at a time.
  2. We live in an eldritch horror and it scares the aliens aka this insanity.
  3. We are carbon based and the aliens are not carbon based.
  4. Earth is a zoo hypothesis.

I think it is highly unlikely we are the only life in the universe; But I don’t think we will be contacted by advanced aliens any time soon.
First of all: space is big. And there really isn’t any logistic advantage of spreading out of your little bubble of space.
And secondly: why would any species that evolved be any more advanced than us?
Everyone automatically assumes any alien life out there has to be advanced.
Most likely; any advanced race has already died out loooong before they would have set their sights on our little star.

I agree with what most people have written already.

There is probably life out there, but life might be in a form we are not even able to identity. I don’t believe in green men in space ships, I don’t believe we have been visited or will be visited by some kind of alien life form.

A while back I started reading Sitchin’s The Twelfth Planet but it got damaged before I was able to finish it. I enjoy reading weird theories and believes, even if I don’t share the same view. Sitchin “proofs” that ancient civilizations were visited by aliens and those aliens we’re honoured as gods. It was an interesting read

I don’t think its available in the UK yet (legally speaking).

I wonder how many beings on how many planets are having this same conversation right now? :milky_way:
