For the last couple of weeks I’ve found it really hard to read or comment on stories when using Safari on my iPad, as the sidebar ads keep floating over the comments, like this:

Same here - Silk browser on Kindle Fire tablet.
A day or two ago I had an add on desktop firefox that was glitched from the top bar and did that. It was shaped for the side bar but attached to the top bar, so it completely covered the story.
I was fiddling with it so much to get rid of it so I could read, I forgot to report the ad
Checking in on this, are you still experiencing this issue?
Yup. It doesn’t prevent me reading the stories or responding to comments, it’s just awkward and annoying
